Effect of using two levels of single cell protein (SCP) on the nucleic acid accumulation and meat quality of fattened Awassi lambs

Investigating the effect of feeding single cell protein on the nucleic acid accumulation in different parts of fattened Awassi lambs and on the meat quality produced. Lambs were blocked to body live weight, allocated randomly to three different diets and fed individually ad libitum over a 4 months period. The diets T1 and T2 contained 50 and 75% SCP of the total protein in the diets , T3 was free of SCP and considered control. The animals were slaughtered and external measurements , area of longissimus dorsi muscle and physical components of the 9, 10 and 11 rib cut were measured. Samples of liver, kidney, spleen, testes, leg and sirloin muscles were analysed for nucleic acid content. Carcass external measurements, physical composition and rib eye area were not influenced significantly by dietary SCP. Feeding SCP up to 75% of the total protein in the diet did not affect nucleic acid concentration in different parts of lambs, except for liver. It is concluded that feeding SCP with date stones and barley can achieve reasonable performance without any side effects
