Efficiency of N fertilizer in flooded rice as affected by blue green algae inoculation

An experiment was conducted on a silt clay loam soil from Al-Dalmaj to study the inoculation of soil with Anabaena khannae in presence of two nitrogen levels, rice hull and nitrification inhibitor (Dicyandiamide). The Blue-green Algae (BGA) counts and NH4-N in soil samples during planting were determined, in addition to the rice (Oryza sativa) yield and NPK uptake. The treatments showed various peaks in algal counts after 8 weeks from planting. However other peaks with inverse order occurred after 16 weeks. No significant correlation between algal counts and amount of soil NH4-N at different times of sampling was observed. Algal inoculation with addition of 40ppm N caused 9% increase in grain yield over 40ppm N alone. However combining hull and DCD with inoculation 20ppm N resulted in an increase in NPK uptake in addition to 15 and 21% increase in grain yield over the inoculation 20ppm N. In general, all the treatments had improved N-recovery
