Intercropping system is aimed to reduce number of potential insect pests. Results, however, will vary depending on the appropriate component of the selected crops. Experiments using tomatoes as an intercrop of pigeonpeas were carried out at a garden in Tajur, Bogor (Indonesia). The number of insect species as well as diversity in the intercropped pigeonpeas were compared with that in the pure stand of the same crops. Results indicated that number of insect species in the intercropped pigeonpeas was greater than in its pure culture. The number of insect species in the intercropped and pure pigeonpeas increased with the increase of its developmental stages. The diversity index in the intercropped pigeonpeas was higher than that in its pure culture.
