Rhizobium strains, i.e., No. 82 and 85 (isolates from Vigna cylindrica), No. 119 (isolate from V. unguiculata), AR (isolate from I. hirsuta) and Legin (a flour inoculant containing Rhizobium, produced by Gadjah Mada Univ., Yogyakarta, Indonesia) were inoculated on Indigofera arrecta, planted on sterilized sand medium in the greenhouse. All plants inoculated with HIR, Ar and strain No. 85 showed significantly better performance than the control. Symbiotic capacity was low. Number of nodules apparently did not affect I. arrecta growth. The amount of nitrogen fixed by I. arrecta ranged from 208.64 to 342.92 micro-g N/g nodule/hour. The highest nitrogen fixing activity took place in the plant inoculated with HIR, followed by plants inoculated with No. 119, 85, and 82 strains, and Legin.
