Based on a retrospective view of the hitherto development and of a present-day analysis an approach is made to demonstrate perspectives for a future progress concerning the introduction of integrated pest management methods. Although efforts have been made for 30 years toward the enforcement of such methods, at present, shares of the 12.000 millions DM market are but 1.3 per cent for selective compounds and 11 per cent for semiselective acaricides in contrast to 88 per cent for broad spectrum materials. Reasons for this are, among others, the prevalence of large-scale crops with a wide range of pests (e.g. cotton in the U.S.A) and the high development costs of about 150 million DM, which are the same for broad-spectrum compounds as well as for selective ones with a smaller market volume for the latter. As long as there are not enough selective materials available there is the potentiality of using more ecologically selective application methods like e.g. furrow application, seed dressing or the use of baits that have already been introducted in a number of crops. Compounds of this type have already a world market share of 22 per cent. Finally research activities are discussed for the development of ecologically favourable compounds and application techniques (e.f. random screening, natural products, insect growth reguators and pheromones)
