Quantitative measures of production of adult aphidophaga per unit areas in a seminatural biotope
1988
Hartmann, K. (Basel Univ. (Switzerland). Inst. fuer Zoologie) | Duelli, P.
In the 'cultural steppe', seminatural areas are considered to provide important perennial habitats for beneficial insects such as coccinellids and syrphids. Regular sampling of preimaginal stages of these aphidophagous groups in different vegetational strata of a former gravel pit near Basel, Switzerland, allowed for quantitative estimates of the rate of emergence of adults per unit area and day. The generally extremely low number of subadults encountered, in terms of specimens and species of aphidophaga, is in strong contrast to the rich fauna recorded in flying adults. Thus we assume that the agroecological value of this seminatural area is not in the production of aphidophaga, but by providing a temporary refuge, a stepping stone and overwintering site for adults
