Activity of Abrus precatorius L. extracts and compounds isolated on orientation and oviposition behaviour of the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch

In choice experiments lima bean leaf discs painted with petroleum ether extract of Abrus precatorius seeds deterred the female Tetranychus urticae to oviposit and land on treated discs. ODI reached 100 and 96.49 when using LC25 and LC50 of this extract. Water extract of the same seeds may be deterrent but to a lesser extent (ODI was 70.95 and 82.27 using LC25 and LC50 respectively). The three compounds isolated from petroleum ether extract by TLC, however, resulted in precise discrimination between treated and control discs where ODI reached 100 inspite of the fact that more than 20 per cent of the individuals oriented themselves on treated half of the disc. The reproductive potentiality of the females expressed by the number of eggs laid per female/day on the discs treated with any one of the three compounds isolated from crude petroleum ether extract decreased significantly in comparison to their partners on water extract of the same seeds
