Plants of cineraria were subjected to low temperature treatment (+10 deg C) in a climate chamber and exposed to approximate temperatures of 15, 18, 21 and 24 deg C in a glasshouse. This procedure was repeated at two-week intervals throughout a year and floral development was studied until anthesis. The effect of mean day temperature, daylenght and daily irradiance on daily rate of floral development was expressed in a mathematical model as the integral of an instantaneous development rate, with the integral scaled to give unity at anthesis. Corresponding phenologic stages of floral development were defined. Applications of the model in a system of flower production control are discussed.
