1988
Krieg, A. (Biologische Bundesanstalt fuer Land- und Forstwirtschaft, Darmstadt (Germany, F.R.). Inst. fuer Biologische Schaedlingsbekaempfung)
At present commercial preparations of Bacillus thuringiensis are used world-wide and in a large scale in plant protection. The bacillus only effects target insects (e.g. Pathotype A only Lepidoptera) and is harmless for bees and entomophagous insects. The ecology of B. thuringiensis and its environmental impact is dicussed. Experimental results on the fate of spores in nature are presented and compared with data on the natural level of contaminations of soil. food and water with the closely related B. cereus. A pertinant risk assessment reveals the harmlessness of applications of B. thuringiensis in forests and in the field, including water catchment areas
