Phenological development and nutritional value of timothy
1989
Thorvaldsson, G. (Sveriges Lantbruksuniv., Uppsala (Sweden). Inst. foer Vaextodlingslaera)
Pure stand of timothy was sampled weekly between 25 May and 29 June, 1982. Phenological stage, crude protein content and digestibility were determined for each sample. On average 1.7 leaves and 0.6 nodes were lost when the samples were cut 5 cm above ground level, compared with cutting at ground level. There was no difference in energy content between plants in different phenological stages - provided they were cut at the same time, but the crude protein content was less in more advanced stages. It was also found that crude protein and energy contents in tillers at the same phenological stage but cut one week apart was lower on the later date.
