Response of some maize varieties to nitrogen fertilization. 1.- Vegetative growth and dry matter accumulation [Egypt]

Two field trials were conducted at the farm of Fayoum, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University during 1985 and 1986 seasons to study the effect on nitrogen fertilizer rates on rates of vegetative growth and dry matter accumulation in maize plants and their organs. Three maize varieties, i.e. Giza-2 EV4, C.G. 4141 and T.W.C. 309 were used in this study. The nitrogen rates were 75, 90, 105, 120 and 135 kg N/fed. The obtained results can be summarized as follows: Maize varieties differed significantly in leaf characteristics in the two growing seasons, while no significant differences were found in dry matter production. The three-way cross hybrid 309 produced higher leaf area per plant and accumulated more dry matter in its plants and ears.- Nitrogen fertilization had a significant effect on number of leaves per plant, leaf characteristics and total dry matter per plant. However, the distribution of dry matter among different organs was not affected by nitrogen fertilization in 1985, while in 1986 this effect was more pronounced.
