Present status of aquaculture technology in Southeast Asia

Aquaculture in Southeast Asia is based on traditional practice of trapping-holding-growing technique of fish by artisanal fishermen. The present production methods in the region are still based on traditional extensive methods mainly because it is developed in according with rural agrarian society made up of small fishermen/farmers. Status of common aquaculture production system in this region has been described in this paper, which include natural stocking and controlled stocking. Advances in aquaculture management techniques has been also discussed, which primaliry concerned with milkfish culture in ponds, milkfish culture in enclosures (fish pens), shrimp culture and freshwater aquaculture. Future outlook for aquaculture in Southeast Asia has been favourably commented as the high scope for improvement of culture technique has been demonstrated and developed in a number of places in this region.
