The work of the thirty-eight hectare experimental farmlet at Winchmore Research Station in Canterbury, New Zealand is discussed. Soil type, fertility and weed and pest control are covered. Strategies used to avoid the use of chemicals include nitrogen fixing crops, biological control of pests, the use of disease resistant varieties of plants and animals and the use of goats to control weeds such as gorse and thistles
