Expression by soil bacteria of nodulation genes from Rhizobium trifolii
1989
Jarvis, B.D.W. | Ward, L.J.H. (Massy Univ., Palmerston North (New Zealand))
The purpose of this study was to determine whether symbolic genes from bacteria capable of nodulation and nitrogen fixation on white clover (Rhizobium trifolii) could be expressed by any other bacteria present in the same soil environment. Results indicated that pasture soil contains strains of bacteria which are related to Rhizobium but cannot form nodules on the roots of white clover and that if these strains are crossed with a strain which contains symbiotic genes some of them will gain the ability to form ineffective nodules on clover roots
