Studies on three types of endod were carried out in 1981 to 1985 to determine berry and saponin yields, molluscicidal potency of whole and ground berries, the effect of storage on seed germination, and chemical composition of endod berries. The three ecotypes, endod types 3, 17, and 44, used in the study were selected from 65 accessions collected in Ethiopia. Results showed that although all three endod types could be successfully cultivated, type 44 was the most suitable selection for schistosomiasis control. It gave an annual dry matter berry yield of 2040 kg ha-1 and a saponin yield of 23.0. The mortality rate of B. pfeifferi using fresh type 44 berries at a concentration of 5 ppm was 100 while its molluscicidal potency at LC100 of whole berries was 6 ppm.
