Herbaceous crops with important genetic resources in Ethiopia
1990
Edwards, Sue (Asmara University, Asmara (Ethiopia). Ethiopia Flora Project)
Ethiopian agriculture has a long history which is reflected in the large number of plant species used as crops and their genetic diversity. Both environmental degradation and modern agriculture are putting traditional crops and their wild relatives at risk. Conserving these crops is a daunting task. This paper covers 6 cereals, 12 pulse, 16 oil and fiber, 25 horticultural, and 13 herb and spice crops and gives the names and distribution of their wild relatives as found in Ethiopia. Most of this genetic wealth is in the hands of the peasant farmers. It is suggested that there must be a constructive and dynamic partnership of scientists, development agents and peasants if the rich genetic diversity of crops and their relatives is to be conserved and developed for use as it deserves
