Results obtained in 1982 from an experimental nursery at Subanjeriji, South Sumatra, indicated that seedling development in Eucalyptus urophylla and Albizia falcataria was distinctly affected by various treatments. In particular, the seedling height increased significantly when either compost was added to the potting medium or when mineral fertilizers were used. Shading during the first 8 weeks also clearly increased the height of Albizia seedlings, but no effect of shade was found in E. urophylla. In both species, initial growing in a plastic greenhouse yielded larger seedlings, as compared to the material produced under shade or in open sunlight only. In contrast, the pot design did not affect seedling growth significantly. However, pot trays seemed to offer a wide range of options for the subsequent steps of the whole plantation establishment chain; this fact may favor the pot tray method as compared to conventional plastic tube seedlings, especially in large tree planting programs.
