[Malnutrition, school failure and poverty: a study on rural primary school children]

This article presents the findings of a study on the relationship between malnutrition, school achievement and socioeconomic level among rural primary school children. The study was conducted in 10 primary schools in the rural areas of northern Peninsular Malaysia. The sample population was 482, comprise of standard four children aged 10 year. The findings which were based on examination results showed very poor performance, particularly in Science, Mathematics, and English subjects. Malnutrition was found to be prevalent among the children under study. Socioeconomic data depicts overwhelming poverty in the children's family with very low monthly household income. Statistical analysis indicated that nutritional status, school achievement and socioeconomic status are significantly correlated.
