Since many years different methods to determine the dehydrogenase activity have been used to investigate ecological and ecotoxicological effects on soil microorganisms. The aim of the present investigation is to contribute to the standardization of the method for screening side-effects of pesticides upon this overall activity. A comparison of the TTC method (modified after Thalmann) and of the INT method (modified after Trevors) showed a more general applicability of the first one. The sensitive TTC method, therefore, is recommended and the methodology described. When testing different chemicals to extract formazan from soil, the less toxic acetone proved to be useful
