Prazak, M. (Vyzkumny a Slechtitelsky Ustav Ovocnarsky, Holovousy (CSFR))
The effect of trickle irrigation on the growth and yields of the tart cherry was studied with the cultivar Schattenmorelle (rootstock Prunus avium). The two treatments in the trial were standard practice and trickle irrigation. The irrigation was controlled according to the data provided by the soil moisture gauges (tensometers, irrometers). The average water rate for one tree was 7.10 litres and the quantity of irrigation water was 254.47 litres during 39 hours in the course of the growing season. The irrigated tart cherry tree had 3509 flowers and 345 fruits more, compared with the unirrigated tree. The average yield was 11.91 kg (tree with irrigation) and 10.07 kg (control): this means that the irrigated trees had 1.84 kg (18.3 per cent) more fruits than the unirrigated trees.
