Effect of sowing rate, density, age stand and year on the seed yield of lucerne

In 1986-1988 the following items have been studied in the micro-plot trials: an effect of stand density, age and year on the seed yield. Lucerne of the Palava variety has been sown as a pure stand for three years (1985, 1986, 1987). In the year of sowing, lucerne was harvested for green fodder, in the second and the third years from the second cut it was left for seed. Different sowing rates and seed stand density exhibited the considerable influence on the seed yield on an average for the age and years. The lowest sowing rate (3.5 mill.) with the lowest number of culms (584 per m2) gave the yield on average of 582.0 kg per ha. The higher density the lower fertility and this was at the highest sowing rate (10.5 mill.) 505.1 kg per ha. The trend of yield decrease by the growing sowing rate was more apparent in the older, i.e. three-year old stand. The seed yield of two-year old stands was on an average higher by 59.3 kg per ha than in three-year old ones. As far as the year is concerned, a high dispersion of yields, from 385.8 kg per ha in 1988 (three-year old stand) to 796.7 kg per ha in 1987 (two-year stand) was found.
