The effect of fertilization and harvest by usual and increased number of cuts on lucerne yields
1991
Pristas, J. (Vyskumny Ustav Rastlinnej Vyroby, Piestany (CSFR))
Frequent mowing of lucerne (5 cuts in the 2nd year, 4 in the 3rd year) caused lower yields of dry matter (10 percent of average) than the less frequent harvesting (4 cuts in the 2nd year, 3 in the 3rd year). With increased fertilization rates (360 kg N, 278 kg P and 598 kg K per 3 years), total dry matter yield was higher by 5.4 percent (2.015 t.ha-1) compared to the yield achieved with basic fertilization level (30 kg N, 120 kg P and 300 kg K per 3 years). Total dry matter yields per the 3-year period in newly-bred lucerne varieties ZE-PS (since 1986 known as Magda), ZE 156/1, ZE-PP/B and BU-K 687 did not significantly differ from the yields of Palava variety. Significantly lower yields compared to Palava, were given by Nitrianka and newly-bred BU-K 489. There were no significant differences in the reaction of varieties and newly-bred varieties to increased number and frequency of cuts as well as to increased fertilization level.
