The basis of dairy production in Mzuzu milkshed area is grazing from natural grasslands and to some extent cultivated pastures. The seasonal fluctuations in the quality and quantity of both natural and cultivated pastures follow the seasonal rainfall distribution. Milk production follows the same pattern. Milk production is higher during the wet months and then gets lower during the dry months in the year. This paper reports on facts and figures on seasonal changes in milk production in relation to availability of feed resources in Mzuzu milkshed area. It also reports on strategies that are being formulated by research to develop animal feed resources that would extend through the dry season as well as developing conservation measured of fodder and inclusion of protein supplements in dairy rations to reduce lowering of milk production during the dry season
