Pest management in the Philippines began with the establishment of the Department of Agriculture [Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines] and the University of the Philippines [College, Laguna, Philippines]. Trained scientists in pest control disciplines undertook studies on the biology of pests during the 1900's to 1940's. The degree of control using mainly traditional practices was poor. This changed during the synthetic pesticide period (1940-1970's) through the single method control. The period of pest management (1970's to the present) broadened pest control tactics and harmonized them into the farming system. The concept of pest management has now been broadened to include all classes of pests (insects, pathogens, nematodes, weeds) and in the context is commonly referred to as IPM with the implication of both methodological and disciplinary integration.
