[Research results on the conditions and alternative methods of bean storage in Rwanda]

The methodology, results, conclusions, and recommendations are given of a survey carried out in Rwanda to evaluate bean storage conditions and methods at the national, cooperative, and producer levels, according to agroclimatic regions. Insects, fungi, and rodents were found to be the main causes of storage losses (1.4, 3.5, and 4 percent, resp.). Producers, cooperatives, and traders are the major providers of beans at the national level; therefore if bean seed damage is reduced at these areas, grain losses at the national level will also be reduced. Studies should be conducted on (1) factors like storage temp., RH, and duration and grain water content; (2) efficiency of different storage containers at the producer's level, (3) importance of rodents and their control; (4) development and trial of inspection techniques and apparatus and regular follow-up in national warehouses; (5) efficiency of underground storage to control insects; (6) moisture migration/transference/accumulation in cooperative silos to avoid fungal problems; and (7) efficiency of natural products used by the producer to control insects and insect resistance to well-known insecticides used in Rwanda
