Results of germplasm collection, breeding and selection nurseries and intermediate yield trials are presented. As the multilocational trial 88-89 shows, there are three varieties (Kilyumukwe, Nain de Kyondo and PVA 774) which are superior to the control local mixture. Among climbers, Umubano, G 2338, Muhondo 6 and Vuninkingi were the best varieties. A trial to assess competitivity of selected varieties in local mixtures showed that certain varieties can increase yield of the mixture up to 20 while others tend to disappear. Results from phytopathology nurseries are given as well as results from adaptability on-farm trials. The two varieties RWR 221 and RWR 222 have proved to be high yielding and appreciated. Concerning promotion of climbing beans, results of three trials (association with maize, production of wooden stakes and fertilization) are presented here.
