Since 1987 A, several introductions of CIAT material have been made for evaluation of resistance to ascochyta. Several lines were evaluated in the breeding nurseries in Rwerere. After mass selection in 1989 B, 155 varieties resistant to ascochyta were advanced to selection trials; 78 varieties with intermediate tolerance will be evaluated in 1990 A. Six varieties from the international ascochyta trial were resistant in Rwerere: BAT 1225 and EMP 117 (bush) and ASC 4, VRA 81051, ZAV 21, G 35182 and G 10747 (climbers).
