[Application of a thermophysiological model to find out hybrid corn ontogenesis (Zea mays L.)]
1993
Cancino V, Jose | Charme S, Yuri
Twenty nine maize hybrids (Zea mays L.) were grown in the field to describe and characterize their phenology. A model based on the influence of temperature on biological processes controlled by enzymes was applied, and compared to methods based on chronological days and accumulated day degrees. A split-plot design was used with two sowing dates as treatments, three precocity groups as subtreatments, a variable number of hybrids within precocity groups and four replicates. Main phenological events and thermal regime were recorded throughout the life cycle of plants. Germination under controlled environmental conditions was carried out to determine cardinal temperatures. The following conclusions were arrived at: 1. Total thermochronological integral is a suitable measure of longevity of maize hybrids, and gives better prediction than chronological days or day degrees thermal accumulation. 2. Knowledge of "intrinsic longevity" of hybrids allows for reliable extrapolation to other sites and thermal regimes, and precocity grouping of hybrids is more stable and exact
