Factors influencing the activity of quinmerac and quinmerac mixtures

Quinmerac, a new herbicidally active ingredient, belongs to the chemical group of quinoline carboxylic acids. Naturally, compounds of this chemical group are found in plants as well as in soils. Quinmerac is highly selective in sugarbeets, oilseed rape and small grains with activity particularly against problem weeds like Galium aparine, Aethusa cynapium, Conium maculatum, Ammi majus, Veronica spp. and Lamium spp. Quinmerac in formulated mixtures with chloridazon and metazachlor offers new, flexible and potent possibilities for broadspectrum weed control in sugarbeets and oilseed rape. Quinmerac is taken up via the root as well as the leaves and is systemic within the plant. The direction of translocation is preferably basipetal. Leaf uptake of quinmerac and its combination partners is enhanced when applied with adjuvants. The use of an adjuvant stabilizes the performance of the compounds and reduces the influence of soil and weather conditions (e.g. light, temperature, relative humidity) on the compound's efficacy. Quinmerac itself does not influence photosynthesis directly. It enhances, however, the inhibition of photosynthesis by chloridazon synergistically. Studies on the mode of action of quinmerac indicate that it has auxin activity. This in turn stimulates the production of ethylene, which again is positively correlated with the susceptibility of the species to quinmerac. Visual symptoms are inhibition of root growth, stunting of the shoot, epinasty and anthocyanin-coloration of the leaves. Studies on the selectivity of quinmerac in wheat have revealed that differences in root and shoot uptake could not be responsible for its selectivity but that its metabolism in wheat is much faster than that in Galium aparine
