In the past few years, an increased occurrence of ergot (Claviceps purpurea (Fr.) Tul.) has been observed in the growing and cultivation of hybrid-rye. The objective of this paper was to work out control measures and to pass on possibilities of combatting ergot to practice. In a summary, traditional recommendations and measures for combatting the pathogen C. purpurea from other authors are portrayed. In our own investigations, domestic varieties of rye were tested with regard to their resistance against C. purpurea with the help of artificial inoculations. All the varieties of hybrid rye tested had a considerably higher infestation by ergot than the traditional varieties of rye. On the other hand, no significant occurrences of ergot were found in the triticale varieties investigated in a one-year resistance test. In further investigations, the influence of a calcium cynamide fertilization in winter rye on the germination of ergots laid out on the ground was established. It was shown that the N-dosage in the form of pearl calcium cynamide in spring reduced the germination of the ergot by 40 to 50%. Fungicide treatments were carried out in order to combat the infestation of ergots directly. The investigations were only successful when agents containing tebuconazol and triadimenol, flusilazol and BCM were applied before the inoculation with C. purpurea
