In a field trial carried out at a site predominantly contaminated with copper it was examined to what extent the addition of a silicatic soil improver (AGROSIL LR) affects the mobility of zinc and copper in the soil. For this, at first a sequential method of extraction was chosen that subdivides the total content of heavy metals in the soil into seven different fractions characterized by their bond type. Additionally, the decreasing effect of the soil improver on the heavy metal transfer from the soil into the plant was examined. By soil analysis, it was proved with some certainty that application of the soil improver resulted in lower solubility or lower plant availability of zinc and copper. By determination of the heavy metal transfer it was demonstrated that copper and zinc in the plant samples were reduced by 33.2% and 24.7%, respectively, by addition of AGROSIL LR to the soil
