Trees and their insect pests in the northern hemisphere

Numbers of pest insects for 172 tree species in Central Europe and the western and eastern North America (north of Mexico) were compiled from published data. 2.380 species of damaging insects were recorded, 3/4 of these beetles and moths. Adapted insects, which only attack few tree species, and generalist insects occurring on many or all, were differentiated. Both groups occupy the niches of all trees investigated similarly with a higher proportion of trunc inhabiting insects on conifers and of leaf eating species on hardwoods. Whereas tree genus in conifers shows less correlation, hardwoods are strongly connected through common pest insects. Trees were classified according to their number of pest insects. Susceptibility to infestation as expressed by number of recorded pest insects, however, is not the same in the three regions; also, the insect faunas overlap only little. These findings examplify the necessity to clearly differentiate growth regions when stating insect risk potential to forest trees
