At present, several studies show that increasing concentration of carbon dioxide and other infrared absorbing gases will lead to an average increase in temperature and a reduction in rainfall. Accordingly, it is likely that the change of the productive environments of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) could affect the characteristics of grapevine yield, that are strongly related with many aspects of climate, including thermic pattern. In this paper, the Huglin index is used to predict the effect of CO2-induced climatic change on the viticultural environments of Northern regions of Italy. The historical series of 55 meteorological stations and the simulation data provided by seven GCMs are used. The results show that the increase in temperature over the Mediterranean region might lead to a progressive enlargement of the distribution range and to a different management of grapevine (selection of new varieties, introduction of varieties of other climatic regions, new cultivation techniques, etc.)
