Silvicultural techniques in environmental restoration. Introduction of natural vegetation into Austrian pine artificial stands [Veneto]

European black pine afforestations in areas outside the natural range of this species, started about the twenties and ended around the sixties, are today causing several management problems for various reasons. Thus, an increasing tendency is followed to cut down these stands, chiefly where a promising regeneration of indigenous hardwood is present. In order to gain information on this management choice, efforts were made to check, in a pine stand growing on Garzon mount (Lessini, Verona), first of all if hardwoods (flowering ash and European hop hornbeam) could respond positively increasing their own diameter growth as a consequence of pine reduction or removal. After surveying the positive response for both species, it was then possible to observe that this response ability is found not only in young subjects but also in those undergrowing for a long time. At last, the advantages and disadvantages of different intervention methods are discussed and a different alternative is suggested

I rimboschimenti di pino nero in ambienti estranei all'areale naturale della specie, iniziati attorno agli anni venti e conclusisi verso gli anni sessanta, creano oggi, per varie cause, non pochi problemi gestionali. Va quindi sempre piu' affermandosi la tendenza a procedere alla loro eliminazione, soprattutto la dove vi sia gia' presente una promettente rinnovazione di latifoglie autoctone. Per avere alcune indicazioni su tale scelta gestionale si e' cercato, in una pineta situata sul monte Garzon (Lessini, Verona), di verificare, in primo luogo, se in seguito alla riduzione o all'eliminazione del pino le latifoglie (orniello e carpino nero) fossero capaci di reagire positivamente incrementando la propria crescita in diametro. Avuto per entrambe le specie risposta positiva, si e' poi constatato che tale capacita' di reazione e' presente non solo nei giovani soggetti, ma anche in quelli per lungo tempo sottoposti. Vengono infine discussi i pro e i contro delle diverse modalita' d'intervento proponendo anche una diversa alternativa
