Agroforestry - a farming system that warrants attention from veterinarians
1990
Alders, R.G. (University of Zambia, Lusaka (Zambia). School of Veterinary Medicine)
Recognition of the importance of environmental protection is leading to changes in agricultural methods. This paper focuses on the possible veterinary applications of agroforestry. Agroforestry is a sustainable land management system which involves the growing of woody plants with agricultural crops and/or animals. Aspects of this farming system could be easily integrated into veterinary preventive medicine and herd health schemes. The paper also states that the strategic use of trees can have benefits beyond that of soil conservation and rehabilitation; the provision of shelter (from sun, wind and rain), fodder, and medicinal compounds may directly enhance rangeland production
