Young sheep were fed wheaten straw diets of low S content, with or without additional S in the form of sodium sulfate. Differences were observed in feed intake, in rumination activities, in rumen liquor concentration and microbial flora, in the rate and completeness of digestion of the basic diet, and of non-ammonia nitrogen in the intestines. It is concluded that the effect of insufficient S in the diet is primarily upon the metabolism of the rumen microbiota, and attention is specifically drawn to the significance of the anaerobic fungi in the degradation of fibrous material.
