After considering the introduction and establishment of the naturalised alien flora of South Australia, the factors affecting the composition and abundance of the alien flora of the cereal rotation areas recorded in the literature are reviewed. A field survey and experimental work in the field, glasshouse and laboratory investigated various aspects of the relationship of the alien flora to edaphic and managerial factors. Some specific studies were also undertaken which focused on the mechanisms by which the species concerned succeeded in the South Australian environment.
