[The market of biological farming products in the European Union. Proceedings of a Colloquium, held in Brussels (Belgium) 23 March 1994]
1994
Hecq, W. | Vaessen, A. (eds.)
The European market in organically farmed food was evaluated at 3.8 billion ECU in 1991, a figure which could rise to 11.4 billion ECU by 1995 (estimate : EIU consultants). Organically produced products will account for 2.5 per cent of total household food consumption by the year 2000 (estimate : Agriculture Nutrition and Development). Since 1 January 1993, this market has been subject to a European legal framework within which businessmen must operate. Regulation EEC 2092/91 sets rules for production, processing, import, inspection and use of the description 'organically produced agricultural products' on foodstuffs. In 1993 nearly 400 000 ha of farmland throughout the EEC were being organically farmed, and the products were processed and market by over 2000 firms of all sizes and branches of industry. This symposium offers the opportunity to take stock of the position and prospects for development of this emerging market. It will provide existing and prospective operators with relevant information on factors likely to influence demand (consumer expectations, specific marketing strategies for organic products) and the economic, political and institutional factors of importance to the development of the market.
