Enzootic ataxia in red deer, Cervus elaphus [Western Australia]. [Short contribution]
1993
Peet, R.L. (Western Australian Dept. of Agriculture, South Perth) | Hepworth, K. (Dongara Veterinary Hospital, Dongara (Australia))
Hind limb weakness was noticed in some of a herd of 100 male and female red deer on a farm near Geraldton in Western Australia. A clinically affected animal killed for necropsy showed histopathological evidence of acute and chronic skeletal myopathy, and the liver Cu level was low (4 mg per kg). Enzootic ataxia in the herd was diagnosed, and the apparently low plasma vitamin B12 values found may or may not have been related. All animals were given supplementary Cu and no further clinical signs of deaths were reported in unaffected animals 12 months later, although affected animals became progressively worse.
