[Effect of different nitrogen doses and time of application on asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) at the fifth year after establishment]
1992
Bruna L, Gaston Rafael
A research was carried out at "Santa Rosa" Experiment Station of Universidad Austral de Chile, with the principal aim of evaluating the effect of different rates of nitrogen and their fractioning in the yield of spears, on five years old asparagus plants (Asparagus officinalis L.), variety UC 72, in their third harvest period; evaluating, also, their effect on the subsequent plant development. The experimental design used was a factorial 3x3 in a randomized complete block design, with three replications, whose treatments were three rates of nitrogen (128, 160 and 192 kg/ha) and three fractioning forms: a) All the rate in August (100%-0%). b) 75% in August and the other 25% after harvesting (75%-25%). c) 50% in August, and the other 50% after harvesting (50%-50%). The harvest period was of 90 days, determining total weight, number and calibers of the harvested spears. The morphological characters measured to evaluate plant development consisted in height, diameter and number of stems per plant. These measurements were made after harvesting, in late January, when plants had reached their maximum foliage development. Results of this study were subjected to Fisher's variance test and to the multiple comparison test of Tukey, when corresponded; also, simple correlations were calculated among the parameters evaluated. Nitrogen rates of 128, 160 and 192 kg/ha, gave yields of 8757,71, 10196,44 and 9287,65 kg/ha, respectively, being non significantly different. Fractioning the nitrogen rates also showed no effect on yield. The number and weight of spears produced, expressed as percentage, and in function of the calibers, were not affected by the different nitrogen treatments. Yield, expressed in number of spears per ha, presented a correlation with the total yield in weight
