[Evaluation of the harvesting and selection on the germination capability and vigour of bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)]
1994
Ugarte S, Alvaro Gonzalo de
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of harvest and selection procedures on germinating ability of four bean varieties: Argone, Merlin, Sevilla and Beauty. The experimental design was a randomized block arrangement with four replications: Eight steps of the harvest/selection procedure were used as treatments, namely T1: Pod color change; T2: Physiological maturity; T3: Immediately after threshing; T4: Storage between transport and selection procedures; T5: Immediately after air flow selection machine; T6: Immediately after gravity table selection; T7: Immediately after hand table selection step; T8: After Xeltron machine (commercial seed). Parameters evaluated were germination ability and seed vigor. Data were subjected to an analysis of variance. Honest significant differences were calculated according to Tukeys Test; also, simple correlations among the parameters analyzed were calculated. The highest values of germination and vigor were determined for the physiological maturity stage (T2), for all the evaluated varieties. Threshing procedures reduced significantly only the germination percentage; vigor was not affected. The vigor parameter did not show a clear trend through the analyzed harvest/selection procedures. Germination analysis and vigor analysis were different for the different cultivars. A positive relationship was determinated between one thousand seeds weight and testae thickness, and between germination ability and one thousand seeds weight. A negative relationship was established between germination and seed testae thickness
