[Effect of nitrogen and phosphorous applications on the quality of nectarines [cvs Flamekist, Royal Grand]]

The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus applications on growth and quality of the nectarines cvs. Flamekist and Royal Grand. This work was carried out in the "El Sauce" farm, located in Requinoa Municipality, Sixth Region, Chile. In the nitrogen trials, sodium nitrate was applied at rates of 0, 3.5 and 5.6 kg per tree for both cultivars. In the phosphorus trials the following treatments were applied for both cultivars: a) phosphoric acid to the soil using 160 ml per tree, b) Seniphos, 500 ml per tree, applied to the foliage and c) control treatment, without phosphorus application. At the beginning of the experiments a soil fertility analysis was performed for both cultivars. Subsequently, the following measurements were carried out: a) analysis of nitrogen for leaves and fruits (nitrogen experiments) and of phosphorus and calcium (phosphorus experiments), b) growth of fruit, shoot length and increase in trunk basal diameter. Harvest criterion was ground colour, when fruit reached the 5Y 8/12 of Nickerson colour, corresponding to a fruit firmness of 12-14 pounds. At harvest, fruit firmness, soluble solids, ground colour, cover colour, together with size, number and weight of fruit were evaluated. The fruit was stored at 0,8-0 deg C for 15,30 and 45 days and, the following each cold storage period, it was kept at ambient temperature (18-25 deg C for 5 days), simulating a marketing period. Only a given fruit size, i.e. 60-65 mm in sutural diameter, was used for storage. After the simulated marketing period, the following parameters were evaluated: fruit firmness, soluble solids, ground colour, cover colour and, physiological disorders (woolliness and internal browning)
