Discusses the preliminary results of a research project aimed at investigating the applicability of the contingent valuation survey technique to the services of a government organization (i.e. the Agricultural Protection Board of Western Australia). After extensive pilot testing the survey worked well in eliciting willingness to pay estimates. These estimates appear to be highly internally consistent and had a high degree of confidence attached to them by the respondents despite the difficulty of the task. The overall results suggest that the willingness to pay estimates derived are worthy of substantial further research.
