Hybridoma technology is a reliable procedure for the production of diagnostic reagents. It is a biotechnological process for producing specific monoclonal antibodies against an antigen. Hybridoma technology can also be used to generate monoclonal antibodies against porcine bacterial or viral pathogens. Each monospecific antibody will recognise a specific epitope or antigen determinant of the pathogen and this property may be exploited in a direct testing procedure for the antibody to kill or maim the pathogen. Recently hybridoma technology was applied to the production of monoclonal antibodies for phenotyping class I and II lymphocyte markers.
