Pastures were sampled for dry matter, protein, nitrate and fibre content, and cows for plasma progesterone levels, on 4 farms on 5 occasions over a 7-month period. By comparison with established standards for suitability to breeding cows, dry matter levels in pasture were low and variable, while protein levels fluctuated from high to very high; plasma progesterone levels were high but declining. These data provide further support for postulated association between immature, fast-growing pasture and low conception rates with abortion.
