The behaviour and bruising of cattle during transport at different space allowances
1988
Eldrige, G.A. | Winfield, C.G. (Victorian Dept. of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Werribee (Australia). Animal Research Inst.)
Hereford steers were transported on 4 occasions over 360 km at space allowances of 0.89, 1.16, and 1.39 metre squared per animal. Behaviour was monitored on video during transport; movements of over a metre were significantly higher at the highest space allowance, and animals went down only at the lowest. Bruise scores in the low and high allowances were 4 and 2 times those of the medium; carcass weight at the low allowance was significantly lower than at the medium
