Forage shrub production on salt-affected soils

Millions of hectares of soils too salty for normal crops and pastures lie idle. Salt-tolerant forage shrubs may be grown on these soils. Adaptation trials are needed to determine which shrubs to use in particular areas. Most halophytic forage shrubs are salt sensitive at germination and many have germination inhibitors and special temperature requirements. Interactions between temperature, salinity, matric potential, and inhibition require special attention in designing establishment methods. Direct seeding innovations include special soil-forming techniques to catch and hold water and precision placement of seed. Expensive treatments such as mulches and covering sprays may be used at an acceptable cost if applied as a spot treatment.
