Epidemiological studies on the powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f.sp. tritici) of common wheat (Triticum aestivum) and durum wheat (Triticum durum) in Northern Italy

In the course of the present study the development of the disease was similar in both wheat species. The lower prevalence of disease recorded in the third zone in 1990 can presumably be attributed to the unusual climatic conditions, characterized by windy periods, and to a lower density of plants/square metre? The low levels of infection recorded in 1991 on durum wheat due to the sudden lowering of the average temperature and to the snowfalls which occurred throughout the region when the crop was in the shooting stage. These events caused the death of many plants and the subsequent thinning of the crop, and also alterations to the growth of the remaining plants. From a compressive analysis of the data it therefore appears that: in Emilia-Romagna the most significant increase in the incidence of the disease for both species happens between the stages of booting and heading in the second climatic area average infection levels are higher than in the other two.
