Comparison of onion cultivars in view of the infestation with onion thrips (Thrips tabaci)
1995
Bocak, L. (Statni Kontrolni a Zkusebni Ustav Zemedelsky, Olomouc (Czech Republic))
The collection of 109 cultivars of onion was tested for the infestation with onion thrips (Thrips tabaci) in 1992. The whole assortment was scored at first and the number of thrips on a limited number of plants was counted. Subsequently 23 cultivars were chosen for a more precise testing. This sample of cultivars represented different types of onion and contained all cultivars proving a certain level of resistance in the first scoring. Apparent variability of infestation was proved. The lowest infestation was found in waxless cultivars with light green leaves (cultivars De Grano/Banko, Yellow Sweet Spanish, Sweet Amber F1, Daytona F1 anf Foxy F1). The group of red onion cultivars was the most infested.
