Gives detailed results of a project to study and if possible overcome, the resistance of Helicoverpa armigera to currently used insecticides. Resistant H. armigera metabolise pyrethroids using two enzyme systems, the monooxygenases and esterases, leading to different levels of resistance in the population. A rapid biochemical 'spot test' has been devised to detect individual pyrethroid resistant H. armigera. The test can be assessed by eye and provides a robust and accessible method for showing resistance in field populations. By better understanding resistance and its management more effective control measures can be devised.
